Chapter 17 - The Man on the Recording

The courtroom erupted.
Linda's attorney demanded the audio be excluded. The judge ordered everyone quiet and continued the guardianship petition for forty-eight hours while police authenticated the file.
Outside, Ryan replayed the man's voice again and again.
"I know him."
Mark looked uneasy.
"So do I."
The voice belonged to Charles Bennett, the real-estate broker who had tried for years to buy the Mercer property.
Police pulled phone records.
Linda and Bennett had spoken forty-three times in two months.
The plan came into focus.
Bennett had met Linda twice at a coffee shop near the county courthouse. One receipt recovered from his office showed lunch for three people on the same afternoon Linda first suggested she should stay with us "for a few weeks." On his calendar, the meeting had been labeled M FAMILY - GUARDIAN ROUTE.
That phrase made my stomach turn harder than any insult Linda had thrown at me. Noah was not a grandson in their paperwork. He was a route.
Make me look unstable.
Push Ryan into defending his mother.
Use an emergency guardianship fight to create a record of family incapacity.
Then pressure the trust into a sale while Linda controlled Noah's legal interests.
Twenty-one million dollars.
Maybe more.
Ryan looked physically sick.
"She used my son's crying as part of a land deal."
Worse, Bennett had paid Peter through a consulting company.
Peter insisted he thought he was doing harmless IT work.
Police searched Bennett's office and found draft purchase documents dated before Linda ever moved into our house.
One clause jumped off the page.
SALE AUTHORIZED UPON APPOINTMENT OF TEMPORARY GUARDIAN.
Bennett was arrested for conspiracy, unlawful computer access, and document fraud pending formal charging decisions.
Linda disappeared before police could serve a new warrant.
At 7:12 that night, Ryan received a voicemail.
His mother's voice.
"You think your father told you everything? Ask Thomas what Frank did after Anna died. Ask him why I had something to hold over your father's head for thirty years."
Ryan played it twice.
Then he looked at Uncle Tom.
"What did Dad do?"
May you like
Tom's face collapsed.
"He changed the death certificate."
