Chapter 10 - The Price of Looking Away

My consultancy started with a laptop and a borrowed desk. It was mine. I had never authorized a second company in my name.
The unauthorized account was tied to a shell entity called S. Harrington Strategies. It appeared in Harrington Commercial's records as a marketing vendor. The invoices described campaigns I had never designed.
"How much?" I asked the accountant reviewing the files.
"Four hundred twenty thousand dollars over nineteen months. We're still tracing the recipients."
I sat in Dad's conference room with a paper cup of coffee I couldn't drink.
"That money wasn't paid to me."
"We know," the accountant said. "We're trying to find where it went."
My name had been used to make the transactions look legitimate. Daniel had complained about my working from home while quietly turning my business identity into a disguise for money moving through his family's accounts.
When I called him, he answered immediately.
"Did you set up S. Harrington Strategies?"
"Sarah, I can explain."
"Then explain."
"Mom's company had cash-flow problems. Those were internal transfers. They weren't meant to hurt you."
"You put my name on them."
"It was temporary."
"My name wasn't temporary."
He exhaled. "Your father can fix this before anyone gets charged."
That was the first time he said charged.
"He isn't going to hide what you did," I answered.
"Then you are choosing to destroy my family."
"No, Daniel. I'm choosing to stop protecting it from consequences."
I hung up before he could talk me out of believing my own words.
At bedtime Emma asked if she could take her dollhouse to Dad's guesthouse permanently.
"Of course," I said.

She carefully removed the plastic front door and laid it in my palm.
"Can we keep this part off?" she asked. "I want people to be able to leave."
