Chapter 5 - The Edited Version

At Dad's guesthouse, Emma chose the bedroom with yellow curtains. I sat on the bed while he found a soft shirt that wouldn't scrape my bandages. Every step felt like borrowing somebody else's life.
Daniel's voicemails piled up. He loved me. He was sorry. His mother had never meant for the soup to spill. If I gave him twenty minutes, he could explain the signature.
By morning, Linda had explained her own version to half of Lake Forest.
A private family group chat showed a short video taken at dinner. It began with me rising from my chair, furious, and ended with my wedding ring landing in Daniel's plate. The slap and spilled soup were missing.

I watched it twice. My palms went cold.
"Mommy?" Emma called from the doorway. "Grandma says nice girls don't make scenes."
I turned off the screen. "You never have to stay quiet when somebody hurts you."
"Even if it's family?"
"Especially then."
A family-law attorney named Margot Kim met me that afternoon. She listened without interrupting as I described the slap, the soup, Daniel's response, and the altered video.
"We're going to address safety first," she said. "Keep the hospital records and police case number. Save every message. Don't contact your mother-in-law to argue. And don't post Emma's experience online."
"Can Daniel take her?"
"A court will consider her welfare and both parents' rights. We need accurate evidence, not threats."
I wanted guarantees. Margot offered a plan instead.
That evening, an unknown number called.
"Mrs. Harrington?" a woman whispered. "I served dinner last night. Linda told the photographer to start filming after the argument."
"Who is this?"
"The caterer. My name's Rosa. I took my own video when she stood up."

"Will you send it?"
She hesitated. "Somebody from that family just offered me money to delete it."
