Chapter 13 - The Man Across the Table

Margot arranged Daniel's meeting at a public conference room, with lawyers nearby. I didn't trust private conversations anymore.

He arrived without his wedding ring.

"You look tired," he said.

"I am. Say what you came to say."

He folded his hands. "Mom had me sign a consent form for her accountant. It allowed them to represent that Emma's account had approved a temporary transfer. I knew it wasn't for Emma."

My throat tightened. "You knew it was her money."

"I planned to replace it. There was a refinancing deadline. The company would have missed payroll."

"So you used our daughter as a bank."

He flinched. "I didn't see it that way."

"You saw it every way except the true one."

He looked toward the window. "I thought if I kept the business alive, Mom would finally respect me."

I remembered every time he'd said, That's just how she is. How quickly a husband could turn cowardice into loyalty when his mother supplied the words.

"And the signature?"

"I signed your name. Melissa witnessed it. Arnold stamped it. Mom told me you'd be grateful once everything stabilized."

He said it without shouting. That made it worse.

"What happened when Dad confronted you?"

"I panicked. I asked for time. I wanted to tell you after Christmas."

"You watched hot soup burn me to keep her happy for another ten minutes."

Tears formed in his eyes. "You're right."

"I don't need you to agree with me. I needed you to stand up when it mattered."

He reached into his briefcase and handed his lawyer an envelope. Inside was an email chain bearing Linda's instructions about the dinner itself.

The final message, sent Christmas morning, read:

IF SARAH GETS EMOTIONAL TONIGHT, HAVE SOMEONE RECORD IT. WE NEED PEOPLE TO SEE HOW UNSTABLE SHE IS BEFORE THE LENDER REVIEW.

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew she was planning something?"

He didn't answer.
