Chapter 12 - The Rules at the School Gate

Before I could answer Daniel, Linda acted.
Emma's preschool called just after lunch.
"Mrs. Harrington?" the director said. "Your mother-in-law is here. She's demanding to pick Emma up."
"She is not authorized. The court order is in your file."
"We know. We've kept Emma in her classroom. But Mrs. Harrington says your husband gave permission."
I could hear shouting in the background.
"I'm on my way. Please follow your safety procedure and call the police if she won't leave."
I reached the school as an officer spoke with Linda near her silver Mercedes. A shopping bag filled with expensive toys hung from her wrist.
"Sarah!" she called. "Are you really going to embarrass me in front of teachers?"
"Emma isn't a gift you can collect."
"I'm her grandmother."
"And you've been told not to approach her."
The officer documented the incident and sent Linda away. My hands shook until Emma was buckled into her seat.
"Grandma was yelling," Emma said. "Did I make her mad?"
"No. That's a grown-up choice. It isn't your job to manage her feelings."
That evening, a child counselor gave me words that didn't make Emma responsible for our conflict. We practiced breathing and agreed Emma could tell any safe adult when something worried her.
Afterward Emma whispered, "Grandma said if I told Daddy when she scared me, he wouldn't love me anymore."
I held my breath so my face wouldn't frighten her further.
"I am glad you told me," I said. "You did the right thing."
I wrote down her words without pressing her for details and shared the information with the counselor and Margot.
Then the school forwarded a message Linda had sent earlier that morning.

It claimed I was mentally unfit and instructed staff to release Emma only to members of the Harrington family.
Linda hadn't just tried to pick Emma up. She had tried to rewrite who was allowed to protect her.
