Chapter 11 - What Evelyn Signed

Evelyn denied it for exactly nine minutes.

Then she stopped.

We were back at her house.

Mark laid the guarantee on the table.

"Did you sign this?"

She stared at it.

"Yes."

"You knew Vanessa was stealing millions?" I asked.

"I thought it was a loan."

Mark almost shouted.

"A six-million-dollar loan from a company that doesn't exist?"

Evelyn flinched.

"She said she had an investment problem. She promised she would fix it before anyone knew."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

Mark rubbed both hands over his face.

"You let me run that company for three years knowing there was a hidden liability."

"I was trying to protect the family."

"No. You were protecting Vanessa."

Then Evelyn said, "There's something else."

Of course there was.

Vanessa had given her a metal storage key two years earlier.

"She told me if anything happened to her, I was supposed to empty the unit before you saw it."

"Where?"

Evelyn wrote the address.

Detective Ruiz obtained access through proper channels while we waited.

Three hours later, she called us to the station.

Inside the storage unit were boxes of corporate records, burner phones, fake invoices, and photographs of our family.

But the worst item was a folder marked ACCIDENT SCENARIOS.

Car crash.

Pool fall.

Bike collision.

Each page contained notes about timing, witnesses, and how long Mark might be away from the company.

I stopped reading.

Ruiz closed the folder.

"We're treating this as evidence of planning."

Then an officer brought in a small voice recorder found inside the unit.

The final file had been made four days earlier.

Vanessa's voice.

"Price is getting nervous. If he backs out, I'll handle the child myself."

A man answered.

"You touch that girl and this whole thing blows up."

Vanessa laughed.

"Only if someone sees."

Ruiz stopped the recording.

"Do you recognize the man?"

Mark shook his head.

Dave did not.

Then Alan Pierce whispered, "I do."

He looked terrified.

"That's Robert Klein."

The chairman of Bennett Freight's board.
