Chapter 18 - The Last Bottle

Six years after Thomas Bennett's death, his medical file was reopened.

A refill had been requested two days before his death.

Not by Thomas.

By Vanessa.

Her explanation through counsel was simple: she had picked up prescriptions for her father before.

Then investigators found the pharmacy camera archive listed on an old insurance server.

The footage itself had been deleted years ago.

But transaction logs remained.

Vanessa had collected the medication.

Ruiz reminded us suspicion was not proof.

Still, another fact surfaced.

Thomas's toxicology report from the hospital showed an unusually low level of the heart medication he had been prescribed.

Vanessa stopped talking.

Mercer did not.

Facing financial crimes, conspiracy allegations, and obstruction exposure, he handed over emails.

One from Vanessa, sent the night Thomas died:

HE WON'T BE A PROBLEM AFTER TONIGHT.

Another from Mercer:

WHAT DID YOU DO?

Vanessa replied:

NOTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW.

We went home.

Chloe was building a cardboard castle in the living room.

She ran to him.

"Daddy!"

Mark dropped to his knees and hugged her so tightly she squeaked.

"Too tight!"

"Sorry."

She touched his face.

"Are you sad?"

"Yes."

"Because of Aunt Vanessa?"

"Yes."

Chloe thought for a moment.

"She did a bad thing."

"She did."

"Do I have to hate her?"

Mark looked at me.

Then back at Chloe.

"No."

"You don't ever have to hate somebody to stay away from them," he said. "You just have to know when they're not safe."

Chloe nodded like this was serious homework.

Then the doorbell rang.

Dave stood outside.

He held a small padded envelope.

"No return address."

Inside was Maria Ramirez's old employee badge.

And a USB drive.

Dave plugged it in.

One video file appeared.

Recorded five years earlier.

Maria sat in her car, crying.

"If anything happens to me, Vanessa is not working alone."

May you like

Then she said a name none of us expected.

"Evelyn Bennett."
