Chapter 17 - Arizona

Seven years earlier, before Chloe was born, Mark had fallen asleep driving after a thirty-hour work stretch.
His truck crossed the center line.
Another driver swerved, hit a guardrail, and suffered serious injuries.
Mark was charged with reckless driving.
His father paid the civil settlement.
"We were married," I said.
"I know."
"Did your father use company money?"
Mark looked away.
He did not know.
Vanessa knew enough to weaponize the story.
But shame did not prove theft.
So we went back to facts.
Alan Pierce found archived bank records from 2018.
Mark's father had moved $900,000 out of a company reserve account the week after the accident.
But it went into a documented legal settlement account.
Vanessa had taken a real family secret and wrapped it around a lie.
"I'm angry," I told him.
"I know."
"But I am not leaving you."
His eyes filled.
"That's not why I'm telling you."
"Good. Because we have bigger problems."
Detective Ruiz called.
Mercer had used a company plane ticket under another name.
Destination: Denver.
Dave suddenly remembered Maria once mentioned a backup archive at a Bennett Freight vendor outside Denver.
Alan confirmed it.
The vendor scanned old paper records.
Including board ledgers.
Mercer was not fleeing with the ledger.
He was going to compare it against archived signatures.
Police coordinated with Colorado authorities.
Hours later, Mercer was stopped at the airport.
Inside his briefcase was the handwritten ledger.
The final page was exactly where Vanessa said it would be.
Mark's father had written:
VANESSA CREATED ALDER RIDGE. ROBERT KLEIN APPROVED THE FIRST COVER TRANSFER. EVELYN SIGNED THE GUARANTEE WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THE SCALE. MARK DOES NOT KNOW.
Then one more line.
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, LOOK AT MY HEART MEDICATION.
Mark stopped breathing.
May you like
His father's death was no longer just a family tragedy.
It was now part of the investigation.
