Chapter 2 - The Missing Card

The officer barely had time to separate us before Vanessa started talking.
"She ran into the street. Everyone is hysterical."
Dave laughed once, without humor.
"I watched you put both hands on her back."
Vanessa pointed at him. "He is lying."
Officer Elena Ruiz turned to Dave.
"You said you had video?"
"I do. Or I did."
"The card was there ten minutes ago."
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"So there's no video."
Chloe sat on the curb wrapped in my coat while a paramedic cleaned her knee. She had a swollen elbow, scrapes, and a bruise forming along her hip, but the paramedic said we were lucky.
Officer Ruiz asked Vanessa to step away.
Vanessa refused.
"Am I under arrest?"
"I'm asking you to cooperate."
"With what? A child tripped."
Chloe started shaking.
Mark crouched beside her.
"Hey. Look at Daddy."
She did.
"Did Aunt Vanessa touch you before you fell?"
Chloe nodded.
"She told me to stand by the curb."
"Why?"
"She said she dropped something shiny."
Vanessa cut in. "She's confused."
Mark stood.
"No. You don't get to talk to her."
Officer Ruiz took our statements and arranged for detectives to follow up. With the missing video and conflicting accounts, everything suddenly felt fragile.
Then Dave called us over.
He held his phone.
"I forgot something."
Vanessa watched him.
"What?"
"My company installed cloud backup last month."
He opened an app.
A list of video files appeared.
For one second, I could breathe again.
Then Dave tapped the newest recording.
A red message filled the screen.
UPLOAD INTERRUPTED.
He swore under his breath.
But beneath the warning was a thumbnail.
Vanessa standing behind Chloe.
And in Vanessa's right hand was a small blue object.
Chloe saw it too.
Her eyes widened.
"Mommy."
"What?"
"That's what she wanted."
"What is it?"
May you like
Chloe whispered four words.
"Daddy's little blue key."
