Chapter 19 - What Evelyn Knew

Mark wanted to believe the video was wrong.

So did I.

We watched the rest.

Maria did not accuse Evelyn of stealing money.

She accused her of destroying evidence.

"She came into accounts after midnight," Maria said. "Vanessa gave her a box. Evelyn fed documents into the shredder for almost an hour."

Evelyn admitted it.

She sat at our kitchen table and said, "Yes."

Mark looked exhausted.

"Why?"

"Vanessa told me the papers would send her to prison."

"They should have."

"I know that now."

"No, Mom. You knew it then."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

That was the difference.

She had known.

"You taught Vanessa that consequences were optional," Mark said.

Evelyn's face crumpled.

"I thought I was saving her."

"You were helping her become someone who thought she could push a child into traffic."

Evelyn agreed to cooperate fully.

She surrendered records.

She gave investigators access to accounts.

She resigned from the family trust.

Weeks passed. The criminal cases moved slowly, but the company moved faster.

An independent audit found more than $8 million in fraudulent transfers and concealed liabilities.

Mark refused to hide any of it.

Bennett Freight disclosed the losses, hired outside compliance leadership, and paid restitution where required.

Dave was offered a management job.

He turned it down.

"I like driving."

Mark smiled.

"Then at least let me replace the brake lines."

Dave laughed for the first time in weeks.

Vanessa remained in custody pending proceedings.

Then prosecutors recovered the one piece of evidence I had wanted from the beginning.

Dave's dashcam provider reconstructed the full original file.

No glitch.

No missing seconds.

The video showed Vanessa stepping behind Chloe.

It showed her looking both ways.

It showed her whispering into my daughter's ear.

Then it showed both hands pushing.

The audio was perfectly clear.

"Daddy will think it was an accident."

Ruiz paused the frame.

"This is the version the jury will see."

I stared at Vanessa's hands on my child's back.

For the first time, I did not feel rage.

I felt finished.
