Chapter 1 - The Flower Pot

The flowerpot hit Claire Bennett before her husband even knew she was in danger.

One second, she was carrying six-year-old Emma across the church courtyard. The next, a huge terracotta planter was spinning through the air, spilling dirt and yellow flowers. Claire turned her body toward the child. The impact threw her onto the stone walkway with a sound Daniel would hear in his nightmares.

"MOMMY!" Emma screamed.

Claire did not get up. Her silver cross rested against her coat, moving only when she took a shallow breath. Emma crawled beside her, tugging at her sleeve.

"Wake up. Please, Mommy."

Twenty feet away stood Mallory Bennett, Daniel's older sister. She wore a blue sequined dress to their mother's funeral, a dress far too bright for the occasion. Her red hair had come loose from its pins. Behind her strange reddish contact lenses, her eyes were fixed on Claire.

"She had no right to bring that here!" Mallory shouted.

Daniel came through the cemetery gate as the mourners scattered. He saw the broken pot. He saw his daughter crying. Then he saw the woman he loved lying motionless on the ground.

"Claire?"

He ran toward her, but anger intercepted him. Beside the path stood another heavy planter. He seized it with both hands. Someone yelled his name. He swung before he could think.

The pot struck Mallory's shoulder and shattered. She fell against a stone bench. Her expression changed from rage to disbelief.

For a heartbeat Daniel felt nothing. Then Emma cried, "Daddy, Mommy won't answer!"

He dropped to his knees beside Claire. "Honey, look at me. Come on."

He checked for breathing with shaking fingers. She was breathing, but it was faint. A man dialed 911. Somebody carried Emma away from the broken pottery.

Daniel pressed his forehead against Claire's hand. "I made it worse," he whispered. "I should've come straight to you."

From beside the bench, Mallory began to laugh through her tears.

"You don't even know," she said, "what your wife brought to the funeral."

And then Claire's breathing stopped for a terrible second.
