Chapter 17 - The Letter for Emma

The letter was in a plain white envelope with Emma's name written in Helen's sloping handwriting. Reyes documented it before releasing it to the family.

"Do you want to read it?" he asked Claire.

She touched the envelope. "It's hers. Let's wait until Emma wants it."

That evening, Emma sat between them on the couch. Claire still tired easily, and loud noises made her flinch. The family had learned to announce when a door was closing. No one made jokes about her fear.

Emma opened the letter with great care. Inside was a photograph of Helen holding her at the beach and a few lines in blue ink.

My sweet girl, you make people feel seen. Don't lose that. If you ever feel frightened, tell somebody who will listen. You never have to protect grown-ups by keeping a dangerous secret. Love, Grandma Helen.

Emma read it twice. "Grandma knew I would be scared?"

"Grandma knew everyone gets scared sometimes," Claire answered. "Even brave people."

Later, Daniel sat alone in the kitchen and listened to the recording of Helen's unanswered call. He didn't know what was worse: the questions he'd never get to ask, or the way he had mistaken his mother's gentleness for weakness.

Nadia called after nine. Victor's recovered documents matched several forged authorizations. Mallory had admitted signing false reports and helping him hide accounts. She also admitted she had thrown the planter at Claire because she believed Claire intended to expose the fraud that day.

"She says she wanted to scare her into silence," Nadia reported.

"She nearly killed her."

"Yes," Nadia said. "And intent doesn't erase harm."

Daniel turned as Claire entered the kitchen, one hand on the doorway for balance.

"I want to tell the court what happened," she said. "In my own words."
