Chapter 12 - Blue Iris

Daniel remembered him at Helen's birthday parties, praising her charity while quietly pulling Mallory aside to discuss money.

Reyes had investigators request records from his company. While they worked, Nadia filed an emergency petition to prevent disputed property transfers. A judge scheduled a hearing for the next day.

"We can stop some damage," Nadia told Daniel. "But don't mistake that for everything being solved."

Meanwhile, Claire started physical therapy. Standing beside the hospital bed for thirty seconds left her dizzy and furious.

"I used to carry Emma and three grocery bags," she said. "Now everybody cheers because I stood up."

"You don't have to be grateful for this," Daniel said.

"I am grateful I'm alive. I'm also angry. Both can be true."

Her therapist smiled at that. Daniel did too, until Claire took his hand and asked him to be honest about Mallory.

"I hit her," he said. "I didn't have to tell the police. But I did."

"Good. Because Emma saw you."

"I know."

"She needs to learn that protecting somebody isn't the same as hurting another person."

Daniel promised to keep showing up for counseling and the legal process. Claire believed him, though her forgiveness for his mistake was not automatic.

At the courthouse the following morning, Mallory arrived wearing a sling. She stared at Daniel across the hallway.

"You're ruining Mom's name," she hissed.

"You threw a planter at my wife while she held my child."

"I didn't mean for Claire to end up in surgery."

"You had no right to aim at her at all."

Mallory's mouth tightened. "Victor said the papers were legal."

Daniel stood still. She seemed to realize what she'd admitted only after saying it.

Nadia emerged from the courtroom with a new filing in her hand. "Victor just claimed Helen authorized everything," she said. "He submitted a notarized document dated the day your mother was in hospice."

Daniel read the witness line and felt sick.

The notary was Mallory Bennett.
