Chapter 15 - The Warehouse Door

Police units headed for Mercer Road. Daniel followed at a distance with Nadia after Reyes warned him not to interfere. He was frightened for Mallory in a way he hadn't expected. He hated what she'd done. He did not want to stand at another funeral.

The warehouse sat behind a rusted gate, its loading docks lined with empty planters. One security light flickered above a metal door. A forklift rumbled somewhere inside.

Reyes's team approached cautiously. A man in a gray work jacket came out carrying a box of documents. He saw the officers and dropped it. Papers spread across the gravel like startled birds.

"Hands where I can see them," an officer ordered.

The man ran, slipped, and was stopped beside the loading ramp. Daniel recognized the torn sleeve from Helen's house. He held himself still while officers took control.

Then a woman's voice rang out behind the warehouse wall.

"Somebody help me!"

Mallory was trapped inside a small storage room. Someone had tied the outside latch with a heavy cable, and the power to the corridor was off. Officers forced the latch while firefighters checked the building. When Mallory stumbled into the light, she was crying and covered in dust.

She saw Daniel beyond the police line. "I didn't think you'd come."

"I didn't come to pretend you were innocent," he said. "I came because nobody should be locked in a room."

Mallory lowered her head. "Victor took the originals. He told me if I talked, he'd destroy every record and make sure the families lost their houses."

"Where is he?" Reyes asked.

Mallory pointed toward the rear loading bay. "He left five minutes ago. He has the deed files."

An officer spoke into his radio. Patrol units were checking the roads. Nadia called the bank to extend a preservation request. Then Reyes found an invoice on the ground: a payment order scheduled to settle at five o'clock that evening.

If the transfer went through, the disputed money could be scattered before investigators secured it.

The clock above the loading dock read 4:42.
