Chapter 1 - The Fall

Sarah heard the ultrasound tear before she felt Eleanor's hands on her shoulders.

"You don't belong in this family," Eleanor Vance said.

Eight months pregnant, Sarah turned toward the balcony rail just as the older woman shoved her with both hands.

Her heel slid on polished marble.

Then there was nothing under her.

Sarah screamed as the upper landing vanished above her. She wrapped both arms around her belly, certain the next thing she would feel would be stone.

Instead, she hit a man's chest.

Arthur Bell, the Vance family's seventy-two-year-old butler, staggered backward under the impact. One knee struck the floor, but he kept both arms locked around Sarah until two maids rushed forward and helped steady them.

For three seconds, nobody spoke.

Eleanor stood at the railing above them, pale now, one hand still extended.

Arthur looked up.

He had served the Vance family for forty years. He had watched Ethan Vance learn to walk, bury his mother, graduate college, and take control of the company his father built.

He had also learned when silence became cowardice.

Arthur reached into his jacket and dialed 911.

Eleanor's face changed.

"Put that phone down."

Arthur did not blink.

"Emergency services," he said calmly. "A pregnant woman has been pushed from an upper balcony at 14 Vance Hill Road. She is conscious. Eight months pregnant. Send police and an ambulance."

"Arthur!"

Sarah felt a hard tightening across her abdomen.

Then another.

She grabbed his sleeve.

"Something's wrong."

The head housekeeper, Miriam Cole, dropped to her knees beside her. "Sarah, look at me. Breathe."

Eleanor hurried down the staircase, already changing her story.

"She slipped," she said. "Everyone saw it. She rushed for the picture and slipped."

Arthur slowly turned his head.

"No, ma'am."

Eleanor stopped.

"I saw your hands."

One maid gasped.

Another lowered her eyes.

Sarah's stomach tightened again, sharper this time.

Then tires screamed outside the mansion gates.

Eleanor whispered, "You have no idea what you've just done."

May you like

Arthur looked at the torn ultrasound lying on the foyer floor.

"I believe," he said, "we are finally about to find out."
