Chapter 5 - The Man Who Left

Victor Dane's phone went straight to voicemail.

His company SUV was found forty minutes later at a commuter station, wiped clean except for a parking receipt and a half-empty bottle of water.

No Victor.

No laptop.

No security tablet.

Ethan paced the hospital corridor while detectives searched the estate.

Sarah remained under observation, furious at being trapped in bed while everyone else moved around her.

At midnight, the contractions finally slowed.

The baby was safe.

For now.

Arthur sat beside the window.

"You should sleep."

"I almost fell onto marble eight hours ago. I don't think my body remembers how."

Arthur nodded.

Sarah studied him.

"Why did you catch me?"

He raised one eyebrow.

"Because you were falling."

"That's not what I mean. Everyone else was afraid of her."

Arthur looked down at his hands.

"I was afraid too."

"You didn't act like it."

"Courage and fear often arrive together. One simply has to choose who speaks first."

Then he reached into his coat and handed Sarah a small brass key.

"Your father-in-law gave me this six years ago."

"For what?"

"A box in the old wine cellar. He told me to open it if Eleanor ever became dangerous to Ethan's family."

Sarah stared at him.

"You waited six years?"

"Until today, she was cruel. Cruelty is not always conspiracy."

He looked toward her belly.

"Pushing you changed the category."

At dawn, Ethan drove Arthur back to the estate under police escort.

The wine cellar had been searched, but the old storage alcove behind the racks had not.

Arthur found a narrow wooden box behind a loose limestone panel.

The brass key fit.

Inside were three things.

A handwritten ledger.

A sealed letter addressed to Ethan.

And a flash drive labeled: IF ELEANOR CONTROLS THE BOARD.

Ethan opened the letter first.

His father's handwriting shook across the page.

Ethan, if you are reading this, then I failed to stop her while I was alive.
