Chapter 3 - The Child Who Changed the Trust

Ethan read the page twice.
"What is this?"
Eleanor reached for it. "Old paperwork. Give it to me."
He pulled it away.
The document was only one torn strip, but it carried a trust number and the signature of Ethan's late father, Robert Vance.
Sarah had never seen it before.
"Why was that attached to my ultrasound?"
Eleanor's eyes narrowed. "It wasn't. Arthur planted it."
Arthur almost laughed.
"At my age, ma'am, I have many weaknesses. Acrobatics with legal documents is not one of them."
Ethan called the family's outside attorney, Julian Cross, and demanded the complete trust file.
Julian went silent for too long.
"Ethan, this is not a hospital conversation."
"Then make it one."
Twenty minutes later, a secure file arrived.
Robert Vance had created the Heritage Trust before his death. Eleanor had been given temporary voting authority over a block of family shares while Ethan had no children.
But upon the birth of Ethan's first child, that authority automatically ended.
The shares moved into a protected trust for the child, with Ethan as trustee until age twenty-five.
Sarah looked at Eleanor.
"You lose control when my baby is born."
Eleanor's expression did not move.
Ethan kept reading.
The trust controlled thirty-four percent of Vance Holdings.
Combined with Ethan's personal shares, it gave him unquestioned control of the company.
Without it, Eleanor remained the most powerful swing vote on the board.
"You knew," Ethan said.
"Of course I knew. I helped your father manage the estate."
"And you never told me."
"Because you never asked."
Sarah felt another contraction.
A nurse rushed in and checked the monitor.
"We need her calm. Now."
Ethan escorted Eleanor into the hall.
Through the glass, Sarah saw him say something low and furious.
Eleanor answered with a smile.
Then Julian Cross called back.
His voice was strained.
"Ethan, there's another problem. Someone filed an amendment to that trust six weeks ago."
"What amendment?"
"It says if Sarah is declared medically unstable before delivery, temporary authority remains with Eleanor for five additional years."
Sarah stared at the phone.
"I never signed anything."
May you like
Julian swallowed audibly.
"According to the filing," he said, "you did."
