Chapter 19 - Eleanor's Last Lie

Sarah agreed to see Eleanor through a glass partition at the county jail.

Ethan hated the idea.

Arthur hated it more.

But Sarah needed to look at the woman who had tried to erase her child.

Eleanor entered wearing a beige jail uniform, without pearls, assistants, or control.

For the first time, she looked ordinary.

"You named her Catherine," Eleanor said.

Sarah said nothing.

Eleanor smiled faintly. "Cruel."

"Appropriate."

"You think you've won."

"This isn't a game."

"Everything is a game when enough money is involved."

Sarah leaned closer to the glass.

"Why did you push me?"

Eleanor's face stayed calm.

"Because you would have taken everything."

"It was never yours."

That sentence finally broke something.

Eleanor's eyes flashed.

She confessed to drugging Robert, insisting she only meant to frighten him into delaying his confrontation.

She admitted paying Preston to conceal the toxicology report.

When Sarah asked about Catherine, Eleanor hesitated.

Then she said, "The saddle was Preston's idea."

"But you paid him."

Silence.

That was enough.

Sarah stood.

Eleanor leaned forward.

"You still don't understand. Ethan's father loved me."

Sarah looked back.

"Maybe. But love that requires everyone else to disappear isn't love."

She walked away.

Outside, Ethan waited with the baby asleep against his chest.

Arthur stood beside him.

Sarah kissed Catherine's forehead.

For the first time since the balcony, she felt the fear begin to loosen.

Then Ethan handed her an envelope.

"This came from Switzerland."

Inside was a letter Catherine Vance had written decades earlier to her future grandchild.
