Chapter 14 - Box 611

Police reached First Texas Bank before Ethan did.

Too late.

Someone had attempted to access Box 611 twenty-three minutes earlier using forged authorization.

The bank manager had refused because the signature did not match Malcolm's archived specimen.

The man left before security arrived.

Camera footage showed Preston Hale.

Ethan finally understood why Preston had called.

He did not want to confess.

He wanted to know whether Ethan had found the key.

The bank opened the box under police supervision.

Inside was a black notebook, two sealed envelopes, and a mini cassette recorder.

The notebook documented payments Robert had made under pressure for nearly fifteen years.

Some funded shell companies.

Some paid Preston.

Some went to Malcolm.

But the final pages were different.

Robert had started recording evidence against Eleanor.

One entry read: E threatened Sarah before engagement dinner. Says Ethan's future children change everything. Must amend trust protections.

Another read: P says C's accident can never be reopened. He knows more than he admits.

The last entry had been written the night before Robert's stroke.

Tomorrow I tell Ethan everything.

The cassette recorder contained Robert's voice.

He sounded tired.

If Eleanor finds this, understand that I was a coward longer than I was innocent.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Robert described the financial scheme, Preston's threats, and Malcolm's silence.

Then he said:

I believe Eleanor arranged Catherine's accident. I cannot prove it. But Preston admitted the saddle was "handled." If I die before I speak to Ethan, look at my toxicology.

The recording ended.

Detective Brooks exhaled slowly.

"That's enough to reopen both deaths."

Then her phone rang.

She listened for ten seconds.

May you like

Her face tightened.

"Sarah's hospital floor just lost power."
