Chapter 1 - The Recording

The tablet lit up while my son was still asleep upstairs.

It was an old kitchen control screen left behind by the previous owner of our house, a scratched black rectangle we used for timers, grocery lists, and nothing important.

Then I saw Oliver's face on the screen.

He was standing beside the sink in the same blue sweatshirt he had worn the night of Vanessa's engagement party for her sister. His eyes were red. His knuckles were bruised.

I remembered that night. I had found him exhausted and told myself he had been upset because Vanessa made him scrub the kitchen after he spilled punch.

The video showed something else.

Oliver stared directly into the tiny camera above the tablet.

"Dad, if you see this, don't sign anything she gives you. Please."

Then another file opened automatically.

Vanessa stood by the pantry with her phone pressed to her ear. She thought she was alone.

"Once he signs the papers, the boy won't matter anymore," she said.

A man's voice answered through the speaker, too faint for me to recognize.

"I know what the trust says. I'm handling Daniel. You handle the hospital file."

My name is Daniel Mercer. Oliver is my nine-year-old son. Vanessa had been my wife for four years.

Until that moment, I believed her worst secret was cruelty.

I had no idea she had been planning something.

I replayed the clip three times, then called Detective Mara Kim, the officer who had interviewed Oliver two days earlier after a teacher reported the bruises on his hands.

She arrived with a digital forensics technician before sunrise.

They removed the tablet from the wall.

"This thing has local storage," the technician said. "A lot of it."

Mara looked at me. "Did Vanessa know?"

"She thought it was dead technology."

The technician recovered twenty-seven deleted files.

The last one showed Vanessa sliding open a hidden panel behind the kitchen console.

Mara crossed the room and pressed the same piece of molding.

A narrow compartment clicked open.

Inside was a blue folder with my name on it.

The first page was a petition asking a court to transfer temporary custody of Oliver to Vanessa.

The second claimed I was mentally unstable.

The third carried my signature.

Then Mara reached the final page.

"Daniel," she said quietly, "this isn't a custody form."

It had been written the day Oliver was born.
