Chapter 17 - Eli Remembers

Children remember strange things.

A smell. A phrase. A face at the edge of a room.

Eli remembered Vanessa because she had visited the Brooks family twice when he was six.

She introduced herself as "Aunt Nessa," a friend from the adoption agency.

Vanessa brought expensive gifts and asked invasive questions about Eli's health, school, and whether he had ever needed genetic testing.

After the second visit, Anne told Grant she wanted no more contact.

That was when the "record maintenance fees" began.

Vanessa had been monitoring both boys.

Why?

The answer was in Rachel's trust.

If both boys were alive and legally recognized, the old fraud could be reopened. Every transfer tied to the foundation could be challenged.

Vanessa didn't need Eli dead.

And she needed Oliver controlled.

The boys met by video first.

Oliver stared at Eli for five full seconds.

Then Eli said, "Your hair is worse than mine."

It was the first easy sound I had heard from him in months.

They compared favorite games, hated vegetables, and the identical scar above their left eyebrows - both from unrelated childhood accidents.

Then Eli asked, "Did our mom know about me?"

I played Rachel's recording.

There are two boys. Do not let them tell you otherwise.

Neither child spoke for a while.

Finally Eli whispered, "She knew."

"Yes," I said.

After the call, Mara arrived with one more recovered file from Grant's vault.

It was a letter Rachel had dictated but never sent.

Daniel, if they separate us, do not spend your life blaming yourself. Find our boys. Love whoever kept them safe. Do not punish a child for what adults did.

I read the last line three times.

Love whoever kept them safe.

Rachel had written the instruction Anne and I needed nine years later.

Mara waited until I finished.

Then she placed another sheet beside it.

"Grant is offering a full statement."

"Why?"

"Because he says Vanessa kept one secret even from him."

"What secret?"

Mara's expression hardened.

"The custody plan wasn't only about Oliver. She had already filed papers naming herself guardian of Eli too."
