Chapter 15 - The Original Ledger

The ledger mattered because every digital record could be attacked as altered.
The original nursery log could not.
It contained handwritten bracelet numbers, delivery times, transfers, and nurse initials.
Celia believed it had vanished the morning Rachel died.
Grant had kept it as insurance.
Vanessa offered a deal before Mara even asked.
"I can take you to it."
Mara stared at her. "In exchange for what?"
"Protection from Grant."
"You're under investigation for fraud, conspiracy, witness intimidation, and possible kidnapping."
Vanessa looked at me instead.
"You want the truth about Rachel? I can give it to you."
Every part of me wanted to say yes.
"You give us evidence because it exists. Prosecutors decide what that is worth."
Vanessa's lawyer arrived twenty minutes later.
By evening, we had a location.
The ledger was stored in a private vault beneath an old country club Grant's foundation owned through a shell company.
They found the ledger.
They also found cash, adoption records, blank hospital forms, and copies of birth certificates from at least seven other families.
The Mercer case was not the first.
It may not even have been the worst.
Then they found a small metal box marked R.M.
Rachel Mercer.
Inside was her hospital bracelet.
Oliver's bracelet.
And a second newborn bracelet.
BABY B - MERCER.
I held it through an evidence bag and cried without caring who saw.
"We have enough for DNA testing now."
Vanessa, seated across the room, watched me.
"You still don't know everything," she said.
"Then talk."
"Rachel didn't die because we changed a chart."
Mara's voice sharpened. "Vanessa."
"Grant panicked after she called security. He told Sloan to delay the blood order until Rachel was sedated."
"Delay it by how long?"
"Forty-seven minutes."
May you like
The room disappeared around me.
Then Vanessa whispered, "And I knew he did it."
