Chapter 11 - Rachel's Last Hour

For nine years I believed Rachel died because her body failed.
Now a frightened doctor was telling me paperwork had failed first.
Sloan said Rachel developed severe bleeding after delivery but initially stabilized.
She was awake. Alert. Angry.
She kept demanding her second baby.
A nurse documented the requests.
Those notes vanished from the final chart.
At 4:30 a.m., Rachel asked to speak with hospital security.
At 4:42, Grant Vale entered her room with Vanessa Lane.
At 5:10, Rachel's condition suddenly deteriorated.
"Did they hurt her?" I asked.
Sloan shook his head fast. "I don't know. I swear. I only know her medication record was edited afterward."
"Records staff could alter timestamps. Pharmacy staff could alter administration logs. Physicians could enter late notes."
"And you?"
"I entered one late note because Vale told me to. It said Rachel had been confused and disoriented. She wasn't."
Instead, I asked, "Why did you do it?"
"I was twenty-eight. In debt. Terrified of losing my career."
"So you helped erase my wife."
Mara slid the old recorder toward him.
Rachel's voice filled the room.
Bring my husband back in here. Now.
Then he said something useful.
Rachel had hidden a voice memo on the hospital's patient entertainment system. She knew people were taking papers from her room, so she recorded a message using the bedside console.
Those systems had been archived when the hospital renovated.
By evening, technicians found an encrypted backup tied to Rachel's room number.
The audio was damaged, but one section played clearly.
Rachel whispered, "Daniel, there are two boys. Do not let them tell you otherwise. Vanessa Lane took one bracelet. Grant says I signed papers. I did not."
Then Rachel coughed and continued.
"If something happens to me, find Nurse Celia Hart. She saw everything."
Mara searched the old employee directory.
She lived forty minutes away.

But when officers reached her house, the front door stood open.
On her kitchen table was a fresh envelope addressed to me.
