Chapter 16 - Forty-Seven Minutes

Vanessa's confession did not make her brave.
She admitted Grant had ordered the blood products held while he tried to force Rachel to sign paperwork confirming the private placement.
By the time the order was released, she was crashing.
"Did you want her dead?" I asked.
"No. I wanted the money. I wanted Grant to stop treating me like a clerk. I told myself she would recover."
"And when she didn't?"
"When she didn't," she said, "Grant told me we were all finished unless we fixed the record."
So they rewrote Rachel's last hour as confusion and sudden unavoidable decline.
And years later, Vanessa found me.
"Was marrying me Grant's idea?"
"At first," she said. "Then I..."
"Don't."
I would not let her place love on top of what she had done and call it complicated.
His passport pinged at a private border crossing under another name.
They caught him two miles away after his car slid into a ditch.
No dramatic escape. No final speech.
Just a muddy man in an expensive coat being pulled from a broken sedan.
I thought I would feel victory.
The DNA test came the next morning.
Probability that Oliver Mercer and Elijah Brooks were identical twins: greater than 99.99 percent.
I sat with the paper in my hands until Oliver entered the room.
He had been told the basics by his counselor.
"So I have a brother?"
"Yes."
"Does he have to come live here?"
Oliver had spent months being treated like an object adults could move around.
He was afraid we would do the same to Eli.
"No," I said. "Nobody is taking him from his family."
"Can I meet him?"
"If he wants to meet you."

"Daniel, Eli wants to talk to Oliver."
Then he added, "But there's something you need to hear first. Eli remembers Vanessa."
