Chapter 1 - THE PAPERS ON THE FLOOR

Arthur Vance came home to find his wife gripping his nine-year-old son by the wrist and the nanny backed against the piano with blood on her lower lip.

"What on earth is happening in my house?"

Elena released Lucas so fast the boy nearly stumbled.

Maria snatched a stack of papers from the floor. Her hands shook, but her voice did not. "Mr. Vance, please. Read these. Right now."

Elena stepped between them. "Arthur, darling, she broke into my office. She's been stealing from us."

Lucas ran to Maria and buried his face against her side.

Arthur's eyes hardened. "Stay away from my son, Elena."

"You'd believe a nanny over your own wife?"

"Maria has never lied to me." Arthur took the papers. "You have."

The first page was a petition to replace the independent trustee managing Lucas's inheritance. The second authorized a transfer of twelve million dollars into Vance Harbor Holdings. The third carried Arthur's signature.

Except Arthur had never signed it.

Maria pointed to a highlighted paragraph. "She was planning to drain Lucas's trust fund."

Elena laughed too quickly. "That account supports the family business. You don't understand finance."

"The trust doesn't support anything," Arthur said. "It belongs to Lucas."

Elena's face changed. Not much. Just enough.

Arthur saw it.

"Pack a bag," he said.

"You can't kick me out of this house."

"Watch me protect it."

Elena took one step toward him, then stopped when Lucas whispered, "Dad?"

Arthur looked down. His son's cheeks were wet.

"She made me practice my signature," Lucas said.

Silence swallowed the room.

Elena opened her mouth.

Then her phone buzzed on the marble floor.
