Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER MET HIM

Arthur blocked the doorway.
"Sit down."
"You don't get to imprison me in my own home."
"Then leave your phone and go."
Elena stared at him. "That's illegal."
"So is forging my signature."
For the first time, she had no fast answer.
Maria guided Lucas upstairs. Before the boy disappeared, he turned back. "Dad, don't let her take my blue folder."
Arthur frowned. "What blue folder?"
Elena's eyes flashed toward the staircase.
That was enough.
Arthur followed Lucas to his room. The blue folder was hidden beneath a stack of comic books. Inside were worksheets Elena had made him practice: Arthur's signature, Lucas's own signature, and answers to questions about Arthur's temper.
One page read: DAD DRINKS AT NIGHT.
Arthur rarely drank.
Another read: DAD FORGETS TO PICK ME UP.
He had never missed pickup.
Maria stood in the doorway. "She was building a story."
Arthur felt cold all the way through.
Downstairs, Elena was talking to someone in a low voice. Arthur hit record on his phone before entering the hall.
"No," Elena whispered into a second cell phone he had never seen. "He found the petition. Move the vote up if you have to."
Arthur stepped around the corner.
Elena froze.
"Who are you calling?"
She ended it. "My lawyer."
"On a burner phone?"
Her smile disappeared.
Daniel called again. This time his voice was sharper. "I checked Dr. Reese. His medical license was suspended four years ago for signing disability evaluations without examining patients."
Arthur looked straight at Elena.
"Where did his letter come from?"
Daniel exhaled. "That's the problem. It was notarized by someone inside Vance Medical's legal department."
Arthur's anger shifted into something heavier.

This was no longer Elena working alone.
Someone inside his company was helping her.
