Chapter 19 - MARIA TAKES THE STAND

The final hearing drew reporters, company lawyers, and more security than Arthur wanted Lucas to see.
The judge closed the courtroom during the child's portion.
Lucas did not testify in open court. A specialist interviewed him privately, and the recording was played only to the judge and attorneys.
When asked what Elena had told him, Lucas twisted his hands together.
"She said Dad would lose everything if I didn't help. She said Maria would get sent away. She said families sometimes have to lie to stay families."
Arthur looked down.
Then Maria took the stand.
Elena's attorney tried to make her sound greedy.
"Mr. Vance pays you well, correct?"
"Yes."
"And you expect continued employment?"
"I expect Lucas to be safe. Employment is separate."
"You dislike Mrs. Vance."
Maria looked directly at Elena. "I dislike what she did."
The attorney pushed harder. "You inserted yourself into a marriage that was none of your business."
Maria's voice stayed calm. "When an adult tells a child to lie about his father, it becomes the business of anyone who hears it."
The courtroom went silent.
Then Graham's former paralegal testified that Elena personally paid for the forged will and instructed her to backdate the notary record.
Finally, prosecutors introduced the recovered emails, the fake custody order, the trust petition, the financial transfers, and Claire's video.
Elena's face slowly emptied of confidence.
The judge denied every request she had made regarding Lucas, referred the forgery and financial evidence for prosecution, and extended the no-contact order.
Arthur thought it was over.
Then Elena stood.
"You all think Maria saved this family?"
Her lawyer grabbed her arm.
Elena pulled away.
"Ask her what Claire made her promise about Arthur."
May you like
Arthur turned toward Maria.
Maria went white.
