Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM TRAP

Arthur walked into Vance Medical at 7:12 the next morning with Ben on his left and Daniel Price on his right.

Graham Pike met them outside the boardroom wearing the same calm smile he used at funerals and lawsuits.

"Arthur, I heard there was trouble at home. You should take the day."

"Open the door, Graham."

"The board has concerns about your condition."

Arthur stopped. "My condition?"

Graham's smile tightened. "Stress. Judgment. Stability."

Daniel stepped forward. "Interesting vocabulary. Almost identical to the petition filed against Lucas's trust."

Graham's eyes flickered.

Inside the boardroom sat eleven directors. Victor Sloane was at the far end, though he held no official seat.

Arthur looked at him. "Why is he here?"

Graham answered. "As adviser to several shareholders."

Victor smiled. "Good morning, Arthur."

"Enjoy it."

The meeting began with a motion Arthur had never seen: suspend him as CEO pending a fitness review and appoint an interim executive committee.

Then came the second motion.

Approve a merger proposal with Sloane Capital.

Arthur finally understood the math.

Lucas's trust owned twenty-eight percent of Vance Medical, inherited from Claire's family. The trust had no voting power while Daniel remained trustee. But if Elena replaced Daniel with a "family-controlled trustee," those shares could be voted at the merger meeting.

Victor didn't want twelve million dollars.

He wanted the company.

Arthur looked around the table. "How many of you knew?"

No one answered.

Then the doors opened.

Elena walked in wearing white, carrying a court envelope.

"Actually," she said, "the question is how many of them know you're no longer legally permitted to act for your son."

She handed the envelope to Graham.

He read one page and looked at Arthur.

"A judge signed the temporary order this morning."
