Chapter 12 - The Witness at Mile Marker Eighteen

June Park remembered the rain before she remembered the truck. She had been driving home from a late shift when she saw a car angled against the drainage barrier on Route 47. She stopped, called 911, and stayed in her vehicle because water rushed across the shoulder.
"I saw a red pickup pull away," she told Detective Reyes. "One rear light was broken. I couldn't get the plate. I told the first officer, but it was dark and I was scared."
"Did you see the driver?"
"Only the side of his face. He looked back once. I remember a pale scar near his ear, but I couldn't swear to it now."
Ricardo had a thin scar near his right ear from a childhood bicycle accident. Mateo had known that for years, but a resemblance was not proof.
When Ricardo learned that June had been found, he called Mateo.
"You're ruining lives over a few texts."
"Did you hit Mariana's car?"
"I told the police what happened."
"No. You told them you were out of town."
Ricardo breathed hard. "It was raining. I was scared. I thought she was already gone."
"You left her there."
"I didn't know what else to do!"
"You could have called 911."
"She had the papers. She was going to put me in prison."
"So you let her die?"
"I didn't make her crash!"
Mateo kept his voice level. "You followed her. You hit her car. You left. You let me bury her thinking no one else was involved."
Ricardo went quiet. Then he said, "Vanessa told me you would never believe Sofia if she talked about the truck. Ask your wife what she saw that night."
The call ended. Mateo forwarded the call log to Detective Reyes and wrote down every word he could remember. He did not call back.
When he went inside, Sofia was waiting by the door with Bunny Rose.
"Was that Uncle Rick?"
"Yes."
"Is he coming here?"
May you like
"No. And he won't be alone with you again."
She searched his face. "I think Vanessa was there too."
