Chapter 17 - The Man Who Left the Road

Ricardo arrived at the station looking confident, as if he could still control the story. He admitted following Mariana but claimed he only wanted to stop her from taking the invoices to Mateo.
His lawyer asked for a break. When the interview resumed, Ricardo said Vanessa arrived later and denied asking her to keep silent. Reyes placed the repair invoice on the table, then the messages, then June Park's statement. Ricardo's face changed as each item appeared.
"Did you tell Vanessa to delete the messages?" Reyes asked.
Ricardo stared at the table.
"Did you hide the truck's damage?"
No answer.
"Did you know Sofia was in the car when Mariana died?"
Ricardo looked up sharply. "No."
That answer sounded genuine, but it did not excuse the years of lies that followed. He had accepted work from Mateo's company, sat at family dinners, and watched Sofia grow up without her mother while Mateo believed the crash was caused only by rain.
The prosecutor authorized charges related to leaving the scene of a fatal crash, evidence tampering, and the financial scheme. Ricardo was formally charged and released under conditions while the case proceeded.
Vanessa's attorney offered a deal: she would accept supervised contact if Mateo stopped cooperating with the criminal investigation. Caroline rejected it.
"You don't trade a child's safety for silence," she told him.
That evening, Sofia asked whether Uncle Rick would go to jail.
"I don't know what the court will decide," Mateo said. "The people handling the case will look at the evidence."
"Did he hurt Mommy because she was telling the truth?"
Mateo chose his words carefully. "He followed her because he wanted to stop her from telling me something important. He hit her car and left instead of calling for help. We don't know every thought he had, but we know those choices were wrong."
Sofia looked at the floor. "Vanessa said if I talked, people would take everyone away."
"People may face consequences for what they do. That doesn't mean you caused them."

She leaned against him. For the first time, she didn't ask whether he was angry. She asked if they could make pancakes for breakfast.
Mateo said yes, then put the flour on the counter. Some promises were best kept in small, ordinary ways.
