Chapter 15 - A Room Full of Evidence

The evidence told a different story. Ms. Patel described the pantry hook, the food-hoarding behavior reported by school, and the notes pressuring Sofia to stay silent. Mrs. Greene confirmed that Sofia had saved food in her backpack and panicked when Vanessa arrived without approval. The pediatrician documented the child's anxiety and poor weight gain without claiming a single cause.
The judge looked at Vanessa. "Can you explain the sentence, 'Must stop believing he will always come to save her'?"
Vanessa dabbed at her eyes and said she wanted Sofia to become independent, but she could not explain the note that blamed the child for telling the truth.
The judge turned to Mateo. "What has changed?"
He answered honestly. "I thought providing money and a stable house meant I was doing enough. I trusted my wife and didn't ask the questions I should have. I've changed my work schedule, arranged counseling, and asked my sister to help after school. I'm not asking the court to believe I'm perfect. I'm asking for a chance to keep Sofia safe."
The judge issued temporary orders: Sofia would remain with Mateo, and Vanessa would have no unsupervised contact while the assessment and criminal investigation continued. Visits had to be supervised and arranged through the approved provider.
Outside, Vanessa approached him. "You've taken everything from me."
"You made choices. I'm keeping Sofia safe from them."
"She'll hate me forever."
"That's not my decision to make."
Vanessa's eyes flashed. "You think you're better than me because you were her father first."
Mateo stared at her. "This has never been a contest with Mariana."
For a moment, Vanessa looked almost honest. Then she leaned closer.
"You don't know what Mariana said to me before she died."
"What did she say?"

Vanessa stepped away. "Ask Ricardo."
Her attorney led her toward the elevator. Mateo watched the doors close, realizing she was still holding something back.
