Chapter 19 - The Cost of Telling the Truth

Mateo stopped trying to answer every fear with a grand promise. He made breakfast at the same time each morning, left work before dinner when possible, and told Sofia when he'd be late. If a job ran over, Elena stayed with her, and he called before sunset.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to charges related to the abuse and helping conceal information after Mariana's death. The court ordered counseling and restricted her contact with Sofia. Her cooperation did not erase what she had done.

At Ricardo's sentencing, he admitted following Mariana, striking her car, and leaving without calling for help. The judge sentenced him to prison and ordered restitution for the financial theft. The outcome reflected the evidence and the plea agreement, not the family's pain alone.

He drove to the child advocacy center to pick up Sofia. She had drawn a table with four chairs, one empty, and a yellow rabbit in the middle.

"Who's the empty chair for?" he asked.

"Mommy. I don't want to pretend she isn't part of us."

Mateo swallowed. "She'll always be part of us."

Sofia pointed to the other chairs. "This one is me. This one is you. This one is for whoever comes over and is nice."

He smiled. "That's a good rule."

"If someone is mean, do they have to leave? Even if they're family?"

"Especially then, if they use family as an excuse to hurt you."

Sofia folded the drawing and put it in her backpack. On the drive home, she asked to invite Elena to dinner on Sunday and help choose the food. Mateo said yes to both.

That night, she left her crackers in the kitchen cupboard instead of hiding them by her bed. Mateo noticed but didn't mention it. He simply made sure the cupboard stayed full.

Her therapist helped them make a simple plan: Sofia could ask for food without reading Mateo's mood, use a chosen word when frightened, and call Elena if he was unavailable. The plan didn't erase the past. It gave Sofia a way to act in the present.
