Chapter 1 - The Slap

Evelyn's hand closed around my hair before I even heard her coming.

One second I was rinsing a dinner plate. The next, my head snapped backward and my bare feet slid across the kitchen tile.

"You little thief!"

Pain burned across my scalp. I grabbed the counter, but Evelyn yanked harder and dragged me three feet before I twisted free.

Everyone in the kitchen froze.

My sister-in-law Claire held a wineglass halfway to her mouth. Robert, my father-in-law, stood near the island. And my husband, Daniel, leaned against the pantry door with his arms folded.

He didn't move.

Evelyn pointed at me. "Five hundred dollars is missing from my purse. She took it."

"I didn't touch your money," I said.

"Liar."

Her palm cracked across my face.

My teeth cut the inside of my lip. I tasted blood.

Daniel finally spoke. "Mom, that's enough."

Enough.

Evelyn saw the hesitation in his face and smiled. "Tell them. Tell them what you did."

I looked around the room.

They were all waiting for me to defend myself.

That was exactly what Evelyn wanted.

The day before, I had walked past the downstairs study and heard her whispering to a man through the half-open door. I had stopped when I heard my name. Then I had taken out my phone and hit record.

At the time, I hadn't understood half of what I heard.

Now I did.

I wiped the blood from my lip and reached into my back pocket.

"You wanted an audience?" I asked.

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

I unlocked my phone.

"Emma," she said sharply.

I hit play.

Her voice filled the kitchen.

"Once everyone believes she steals, Daniel will never trust her with the accounts. Then we move the rest before Robert sees the numbers."

A man's voice answered, low and intimate.

"And if she talks?"

Evelyn laughed on the recording.

"She won't. I'll make my son choose. He always chooses me."

Daniel's arms dropped to his sides.

Robert went white.

Then the man on the recording said, "After Friday, the money will be in our account. Then you can finally leave him."

Robert stared at his wife.

"Our account?" he whispered.

Evelyn lunged for my phone.

Robert stepped between us.

May you like

"What money, Evelyn?"

For the first time all night, she had no answer.
