Chapter 16 - My Secret

I sat down at my desk.

"Two months ago, I found irregularities in the foundation accounts. Before I knew your parents were involved, I contacted a federal financial-crimes tip line."

Daniel blinked.

"You reported my family?"

"I reported suspicious transactions. I didn't know whose they were."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you had spent three years asking me not to upset your mother."

He looked away.

I continued. "An investigator contacted me last week. I gave him copies of spreadsheets. That's why I started watching Evelyn more carefully."

Ortiz nodded. "That explains why Robert was worried about you."

Daniel's voice dropped. "Were you ever going to tell me?"

"Yes. When I had enough proof that you couldn't wave it away as a misunderstanding."

The words hurt him.

They hurt me too.

But they were true.

My phone rang again.

Robert.

Ortiz signaled for silence and started a trace.

I answered.

"Where are you?"

"You know what I need."

"The documents aren't yours."

"Everything I built is mine."

"You stole it."

His breathing changed.

"Your moral courage is impressive for someone who married into the wealth she now condemns."

"I married Daniel. Not your balance sheet."

"Then prove it. Bring me the package."

"No."

He laughed softly. "Ask Daniel what happens if Bennett Holdings collapses tomorrow. His employees, his sister's mortgage, your own retirement accounts. Truth has a price, Emma."

Daniel leaned toward the phone.

"Dad, stop."

Robert went silent.

Then he said, "You were always too soft. That's why your mother could control you."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Where are you?"

"Where this family began."

The call ended.

Daniel looked at me.

"The first Bennett warehouse. It's been closed for ten years."

Ortiz ordered officers there.

Then my phone buzzed with one final message from Robert.

A photograph.

Evelyn sat tied to a chair beneath a rusted warehouse light.
