Chapter 2 - The Missing Money

The kitchen felt smaller after the recording stopped.

Evelyn's chest rose and fell fast, but her voice came out calm. "That recording is edited."

"I recorded it yesterday," I said.

She turned to Daniel. "You believe her? After everything I've done for you?"

Daniel looked at me, then at the red mark rising across my cheek.

"Who was the man?" he asked.

Evelyn ignored him.

Robert held out his hand. "Play it again."

I did.

This time nobody moved.

"Tomorrow is Friday," Claire said.

Robert's eyes sharpened. "The Bennett Foundation wires quarterly grants tomorrow."

I had worked part-time on the foundation's bookkeeping for six months. That was why Evelyn had been so determined to get me removed from the accounts.

"How much moves tomorrow?" Daniel asked.

Robert swallowed. "Four point eight million."

Claire's wineglass hit the counter too hard. "Mom?"

"Don't be ridiculous," Evelyn snapped. "I don't control those transfers."

"No," I said. "But Marcus Hale does."

Evelyn's face changed.

Robert noticed.

"Marcus?" he said.

Marcus was the family's longtime financial adviser. He had sat at our Thanksgiving table, toasted Robert's birthday, and called Evelyn his oldest friend.

Daniel stared at his mother. "That's Marcus on the recording?"

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't have to."

"There are six transfers I couldn't match to approved grants. Each one was just under the amount that triggers a second review."

Robert took my phone.

His finger stopped over one line.

"Hale Consulting," he said.

"A shell vendor," I replied. "No website. No employees I could find. Same mailing address as one of Marcus's rental properties."

Evelyn slapped the phone out of his hand.

"Stop this!"

The room went dead quiet.

She had just answered every question without saying a word.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

"It's Marcus."

Evelyn's eyes widened.

Daniel answered and put the call on speaker.

Marcus didn't say hello.

He said, "Is she still there?"

May you like

Nobody breathed.

Then he added, "Because if Emma found the second ledger, we're all in trouble."
