Chapter 10 - My Name on the Crime

I stared at the screen.
There it was.
Emma Bennett.
My name appeared beside three transfers totaling eighty-six thousand dollars.
"I never authorized those," I said.
Evelyn gave a tired smile. "Of course not."
Daniel looked at Ortiz. "Can signatures be forged?"
"Easily. Digital approvals are harder."
"What does that mean?"
"Whoever approved these had Emma's login credentials and one-time verification codes."
My stomach dropped.
Daniel whispered, "Your phone."
I remembered months of strange moments. Evelyn asking to borrow my phone to call Claire. Evelyn insisting I use the family Wi-Fi app. Evelyn standing behind me while I logged into the foundation portal.
"She had access," I said.
Evelyn laughed. "Now we're blaming me for her passwords?"
Ortiz raised a hand. "We can trace device IDs."
Evelyn's lawyer finally pulled her away.
I turned to Daniel. "Do you believe me?"
He didn't hesitate this time.
"Yes."
The answer came so quickly I almost cried.
Not because it fixed anything.
By noon, Ortiz had a preliminary trace.
The approvals using my credentials came from a tablet registered to the Bennett residence.
Evelyn's tablet.
Robert exhaled in relief.
Too much relief.
I noticed.
So did Ortiz.
"There is another problem," she said.
One transfer had not come from Evelyn's tablet.
It came from Robert's office computer.
Robert stood. "Anyone could use that machine."
"The system captured a webcam verification image."
Ortiz opened the file.
The image was grainy but clear enough.
Robert was sitting at his desk.
And standing behind him, one hand on his shoulder, was Evelyn.
Daniel whispered, "You both did it."
Robert's face collapsed.
Evelyn started laughing from the hallway.
"Finally," she called. "Saint Robert falls off his pedestal."
But Ortiz wasn't looking at either of them.
She was looking at the timestamp.
"This photo was taken three years ago," she said.
I frowned. "I didn't have access to the foundation three years ago."
Ortiz looked at me.
May you like
"Exactly."
Someone had created an account in my name eighteen months before Daniel and I even met.
