Chapter 8 - The Perfect Patriarch

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then Robert laughed.

"That's your plan? Break into my house and blame me?"

Marcus tossed the folder onto the desk.

Papers scattered across the floor.

"Read the signatures."

The guard grabbed Marcus, but Daniel picked up the nearest page.

"Dad..."

Robert's expression hardened. "Those are copies."

"Of your authorization forms."

"Forged."

Marcus smiled. "By your wife? Maybe. But ask him about Horizon Trust."

I had seen that name in the ledgers.

"The Cayman account," I said.

Robert looked at me.

Too quickly.

My pulse jumped.

Marcus saw it too. "There she is. Smart girl. Evelyn hated you because you actually read the footnotes."

Evelyn shouted, "Shut up!"

Marcus turned toward her. "You wanted me to take the fall. I'm done protecting you."

Robert stepped closer. "What do you want?"

"A deal."

"You're not in a position to negotiate."

"Neither are you."

Detective Ortiz rushed in with two officers and ordered Marcus to the floor. He went down without a fight.

As they cuffed him, he looked at me.

"Ask Robert why the foundation has two accounting systems."

Then Ortiz led him away.

The lights came back on.

Robert began gathering papers.

I bent down too.

He snatched one from under my hand.

"Enough, Emma."

His tone was different now.

Cold.

Daniel noticed.

"Dad?"

Robert straightened. "This family has been humiliated enough for one night."

"A man just broke into your house," Claire said.

"And the police have him."

"What is Horizon Trust?" I asked.

Robert stared at me.

"A legal reserve account. Nothing more."

"Then why are you scared of me asking?"

Daniel stepped between us before Robert could answer.

"Give me the paper."

Robert's jaw tightened.

For the first time, Daniel didn't back down.

Robert handed it over.

Daniel read the first line.

Then he looked at his father.

"This account was opened the week I was born."

Robert said nothing.

At the bottom of the page was a beneficiary name.

Not Daniel.

Not Claire.

May you like

Evelyn Bennett.

And the current balance was more than twelve million dollars.
