Chapter 1 - The Coin

The little girl had been staring at the hot dogs for eleven minutes before Ben Harper finally said, "Kid, you're making them nervous."

She jumped.

Ben was twenty-seven then, skinny as a rail, working a dented stainless-steel cart near Grant Park because the factory that had promised him a career had closed six weeks after hiring him. The city was bright with late-afternoon sun. Office workers hurried past. Joggers crossed the path. Nobody looked at the girl in the oversized red sweater.

She couldn't have been more than nine.

"I'm not stealing," she said quickly.

"Didn't say you were."

Her fist was closed around something. Ben nodded at it. "What've you got there?"

She opened her hand.

One dime.

"That's all?"

Her chin rose, proud even while her stomach growled loud enough for both of them to hear. "I can pay."

A hot dog cost two dollars.

Ben looked across the park. No parent. No backpack. No coat, though October wind was already slicing between the buildings.

"What's your name?"

"Maya."

"Maya what?"

Her eyes sharpened. "Just Maya."

Ben had grown up with enough hungry nights to know when questions felt dangerous. So he stopped asking. He put a hot dog on a bun, added ketchup because she watched the bottle like it was treasure, wrapped the food in foil, and held it out.

"Ten cents," he said.

She stared at him. "You're lying."

"Terrible business model, I know."

Slowly, she placed the dime on the counter.

Then she took the hot dog with both hands.

She ate the first three bites too fast. Ben quietly slid her a bottle of water.

When she finished, she carefully folded the foil into a tiny square. "One day I'll pay you back."

Ben smiled. "Then make it a good day."

Maya looked like she wanted to smile too.

Instead, she suddenly froze.

Across Michigan Avenue, a dark green sedan had stopped at the curb.

A man stepped out.

The color drained from Maya's face.

She whispered, "Please don't tell him you saw me."

Before Ben could ask who the man was, the girl ran.

And the stranger across the street started running after her.
