Chapter 8 - Ruth's Recipe Box

Ben didn't understand why Maya arrived at his apartment looking like she'd seen a ghost.
"Victor mentioned a ledger," she said.
Ben's face changed.
Maya noticed immediately.
"What?"
He sat down slowly.
Twenty years earlier, three weeks after Maya vanished, Ben had received a package with no return address. Inside was a black notebook full of numbers he didn't understand and a note:
IF THE GIRL EVER COMES BACK, GIVE HER THIS.
"Where is it?" Maya whispered.
Ben swallowed. "Ruth hid it."
His late wife had been terrified the package might bring danger to their home. She placed it somewhere even Ben wouldn't casually stumble across it.
They searched the apartment.
Closets. Storage bins. Old suitcases. Kitchen cabinets.
Nothing.
Then Ben remembered Ruth's recipe box.
It was wooden, scarred, and still smelled faintly of cinnamon.
Behind a stack of handwritten recipe cards was a tiny brass key.
Ben stared at it.
"Storage locker," he said.
They drove to a facility near Cicero.
Locker 214 had not been opened in eleven years.
Inside were Ruth's Christmas decorations, two lamps, Ben's old baseball cards, and a sealed metal cashbox.
The brass key fit.
Maya lifted the lid.
There it was.
A black ledger.
Her mother's handwriting covered the first page.
Maya touched it with trembling fingers.
"Oh, Mom."
Daniel photographed every page while Maya read names, routing numbers, pension transfers, and coded references to city contracts.
Then Ben noticed a small envelope taped inside the back cover.
It was addressed to MAYA.
She opened it.
Inside was a letter from her mother dated two days before the crash.
Maya read silently until her face went white.
"What is it?" Ben asked.
She handed him the page.
One sentence had been underlined twice.
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, VICTOR IS NOT THE ONLY ONE INVOLVED.
Below it was another name.
May you like
A name Maya knew very well.
The judge who had given Victor custody of her.
