Chapter 16 - The Offer

Victor wanted a meeting at an abandoned Calder warehouse near the river.
Police told Maya not to go.
Federal agents told her not to go.
Ben told her, "Definitely don't go."
She went.
But not alone.
Agents tracked her from two blocks away, and Ben had secretly tucked a spare phone into her coat pocket before she left.
"Old people can use technology," he said. "We just resent it."
Inside the warehouse, Thomas sat unbound at a table.
Victor stood beside him.
Maya's first reaction was relief.
Her second was suspicion.
"You came willingly," she said to Thomas.
He looked ashamed.
Victor applauded softly. "Still quick."
Thomas had made a deal. Victor promised to protect Thomas's grandchildren from criminal exposure tied to old shell companies if Thomas discredited the flash drive and claimed Maya fabricated evidence.
Maya stared at the man who had mentored her.
"After everything?"
Thomas's voice broke. "They're my family."
"So was my mother."
Silence.
Victor placed Ruth's recipe box on the table.
"Here is my offer. Drop the vendor suit. Withdraw your cooperation with federal investigators. Publicly state that the ledger is unreliable. Ben keeps his cart. Thomas keeps his family. You get to live your successful little life."
Maya looked at the box.
"And if I say no?"
Victor smiled.
"Then everybody discovers how expensive principles are."
Maya stepped closer.
"You still don't understand the hot dog."
Victor frowned.
"Ben gave me something when he had almost nothing. You offer people things only after you've taken everything from them. That's why you'll never understand loyalty."
Thomas lowered his eyes.
Then, suddenly, he stood.
"She's right."
Victor turned.
Thomas pulled a small recorder from his jacket.
"And you just confessed to witness tampering."
Victor's face changed.
A metal door slammed somewhere behind them.
May you like
Victor's security men rushed in.
And the warehouse lights went black.
