Chapter 15 - The Dime

Ben read the note once and threw it in the sink.
"That dime was mine."
Maya blinked. "You're angry about the dime?"
"I'm angry about everything. The dime is simply specific."
It was the most Ben sentence imaginable.
Police dusted the apartment for prints. Cameras caught a delivery van outside, but its plates were stolen.
Maya wanted Ben under protection.
This time he agreed.
"I'm brave," he said. "I'm not stupid."
The vendor lawsuit hearing began the next morning.
Calder's attorneys argued the city had every right to modernize the district.
Maya stood before the judge and calmly dismantled their case. She showed shell bidders, altered scoring sheets, undisclosed financial relationships, and the internal instruction to remove Ben specifically.
Then she called Mayor Mercer as a witness.
The courtroom exploded with whispers.
Mercer testified that her office had opened an internal corruption review and confirmed irregular contact between Calder executives and procurement officials.
The judge issued an emergency injunction.
The vendors could stay.
Outside, Rosa hugged Ben so hard he wheezed.
For five minutes, victory felt possible.
Then Daniel ran down the courthouse steps.
"Maya!"
He held up his phone.
Victor had released a statement accusing Maya of extortion, evidence tampering, and using a childhood grudge to manipulate city government.
Cable news picked it up instantly.
But that wasn't the real problem.
Thomas Bell had disappeared from the hospital.
Security footage showed him leaving voluntarily with a man in a gray suit.
Maya stared at the screen.
"He ran."
Daniel shook his head.
"Maybe. Or maybe he was taken."
Then Maya's phone buzzed.
A photo arrived from an unknown number.

Thomas sat in a chair, alive, holding Ruth's stolen recipe box.
Beside him stood Victor Calder.
