Chapter 5 - The White Bag

Maya ignored the warning.

She stepped around the cart and hugged Ben.

For one stunned second, he stood stiff as wood.

Then he wrapped both arms around her.

"I thought you were dead," he said.

"I almost was."

That answer landed harder than he expected.

When they separated, Maya picked up a thick white envelope from the car and placed it in his hands.

"What's this?"

"Open it."

Inside were stacks of cash.

Ben nearly dropped the bag.

"Absolutely not."

"Ben—"

"No. I gave a hungry kid lunch. I didn't buy stock in her future."

Maya laughed once, then wiped her eyes. "You haven't changed."

"You apparently became a bank robber."

"Corporate attorney."

"Worse."

That got a real laugh.

Then she became serious. The money wasn't charity. It was reimbursement for years of meals, inflation, and what she called "emotional interest." Ben still refused.

So Maya tried another angle.

"Then let me save the cart."

He showed her the red suspension notice.

She read the name CALDER DEVELOPMENT and went completely still.

Ben noticed.

"You know them?"

Maya folded the notice carefully. "I know the man who owns them."

"Friend of yours?"

"No."

Her voice changed.

"He was my uncle."

Ben remembered the green sedan. The expensive coat. Maya screaming near the fountain.

"That man?"

She nodded.

"Victor Calder."

Ben's skin prickled.

Maya turned toward one of the men beside the car. "Daniel, pull the redevelopment filings. Everything."

"Already doing it."

Ben looked between them. "Maya, what's going on?"

She stared at Calder's notice like it had carried a message across twenty years.

"Victor didn't accidentally take your corner," she said.

"Then why would a billionaire care about one hot dog cart?"

May you like

Maya looked at Ben.

"Because he finally found the man who helped me escape him."
