Chapter 1 - The Man Under the Suit

Sofia Reyes married a stranger because he paid every debt her family had left her.

That was the story everyone at the wedding believed.

It was not the truth.

Ethan Vale stood at the altar in a charcoal suit built strangely wide through the shoulders and stomach. He walked with a cane, moved like every step hurt, and looked twenty years older than the thirty-eight years listed on the marriage papers.

Her father, Rafael, squeezed her arm before she walked down the aisle. "Smile. This saves the house."

"And Mom's hospital debt?"

"Gone."

"Mateo's loans?"

Rafael's jaw tightened at her missing brother's name. "Gone too."

Sofia had not seen Mateo in seven years. No body. No goodbye. Just a bloodstained jacket near a river and a father who kept saying, Let him go.

At the altar, Ethan looked at her with gray eyes far too young for the face he was presenting.

"You can still say no," he whispered.

"And let my family lose everything?"

His expression changed. "That's not what will happen."

Before she could ask, the officiant began.

At midnight, inside the hotel suite, Ethan locked the door and pulled every curtain shut.

Sofia stepped back. "What are you doing?"

"Telling you the truth before your father decides I shouldn't."

He removed his tie, reached behind his neck, and unfastened a hidden clasp. A padded body shell came away. Then gray at his temples. Then a latex piece along his jaw.

When he stood straight, he no longer needed the cane.

He was young. Strong. Maybe thirty-two.

And on the left side of his neck was a thin white scar.

Exactly like Mateo's.

Sofia's breath stopped.

"What happened to my brother?"

Ethan looked at her with something worse than fear.

Guilt.

"Your father asked me to hide him."

He opened the marriage contract and pointed to a handwritten clause signed by Rafael.

Permanent confidentiality regarding Subject M.

"Subject M," Sofia whispered.

Ethan nodded.

"Mateo."

Then someone began pounding on the suite door.

Her father's voice came through the wood.

"Sofia! Open this door before that man tells you another lie.
