Chapter 9 - What Elena Knew

The bank opened at nine.
Sofia reached the safe-deposit box at nine-oh-three.
Inside the walnut jewelry case, beneath a hidden panel, lay the original contract.
Elena's signature appeared only as witness.
Rafael's was the borrower.
The collateral clause named the restaurant company, not Sofia.
Ethan leaned over the page.
"Salazar forged every later version that claims rights over you personally."
Sofia looked at Rafael.
"Did you know?"
"I knew some pages changed."
"And you signed anyway."
"Yes."
She felt something inside her go quiet.
The ring had a second seam.
Sofia twisted harder.
Another tiny chip dropped into her palm.
Mateo's recorded voice played.

Sofia knew it.

The ledger opened.
Hundreds of transfers. Judges. Detectives. Contractors. A state official.
Then Sofia found a folder labeled ETHAN VALE.
She clicked it.
Payments from a Salazar law firm appeared across the screen.
Sofia slowly turned to her husband.
"You worked for him."
Ethan went pale.
Rafael laughed once. "Finally."
Sofia pointed at the screen.
"Did you help Salazar find Mateo?"
Ethan looked at her.
"Yes. Before I knew what Salazar really was."
The room went silent.
Sofia's phone rang.
Mateo whispered, "Sofi, don't bring Ethan. I need to tell you who actually ordered the hit on me."
The line died.

She looked at Ethan and lied.
"Wrong number.
