Chapter 11 - The Shot at the Terminal

The first bullet shattered a window.

Ethan tackled Sofia behind a concrete bench.

Mateo fired toward the upper walkway.

"Back exit!"

They ran as two more shots cracked through the terminal.

Outside, Ethan shoved Sofia into a delivery van.

Mateo climbed in behind her.

For the first time in seven years, the three people at the center of the secret were in one vehicle.

Nobody trusted anybody completely.

"Wynn knows you're alive," Ethan said.

Mateo checked the rear window. "He has for months."

"Why hasn't he killed you?"

"Because he needs the original ledger to know what evidence I gave away."

Sofia held up the recorder. "And this?"

"A conversation between Wynn and Salazar after the garage."

They listened.

Salazar: The boy got away.

Wynn: Then use the father. Rafael will trade anything when he's scared.

Salazar: Even his daughter?

Wynn laughed.

Especially his daughter.

Sofia felt physically sick.

Ethan pulled over beneath an overpass.

"We take this to someone outside Wynn's chain."

Mateo shook his head. "I tried that once. Two agents disappeared from the case."

"Then press."

"And get Sofi killed before breakfast?"

Sofia snapped, "Stop deciding for me. Both of you."

They went quiet.

"I'm done being collateral. I'm done being protected by lies. We make copies. We send them to five places at once."

Mateo studied her, then smiled faintly.

"You always were the scary one."

Her phone rang.

Rafael.

She answered.

His voice trembled.

"Sofia, don't come home."

A man took the phone.

Victor Salazar said, "Actually, Mrs. Vale, please do. Your father has finally run out of things to trade.
