Chapter 19 - No More Contracts

Ethan arrived at the coffee shop in jeans and a navy jacket.
No cane.
No padding.
No secrets visible from across the room.
Sofia slid the annulment papers onto the table.
His expression fell.
Then she placed a pen beside them.
"I want the marriage ended."
He nodded.
"Okay."
"Not because I never want to see you again."
He looked up.
"I need anything between us to start after the lie, not inside it."
Ethan took a slow breath.
"That's fair."
"No contracts. No buying debts. No deciding what protects me."
"Understood."
"And if you lie to me again, I will make your fake old-man suit public."
He laughed for the first time without guilt in it.
They signed.
Outside court two weeks later, Mateo waited with two coffees and a terrible grin.
"Congratulations on your divorce from the husband you're still dating."
"We are not dating."
Ethan said, "Definitely not."
Mateo looked between them. "Embarrassing."
The criminal cases continued for months.
The headlines were loud for a while. Reporters camped outside Sofia's office, strangers sent messages calling her brave, and people who had never met Mateo argued online about why he had stayed hidden so long. Sofia learned quickly that public sympathy could become another kind of pressure. She stopped reading comments. Mateo stopped watching television. Ethan changed his number twice. None of them wanted to become symbols. They wanted ordinary mornings, bad coffee, missed calls, and conversations that did not begin with evidence bags.
Grant resigned before trial. Wynn faced federal charges. Salazar's network collapsed as former partners rushed to cooperate.
Rafael received prison time.
Sofia visited him twice.
The second time, he asked, "Do you hate me?"
She thought carefully.
"Some days."
He nodded.
"Do you love me?"
"Some days that makes me angrier."
He accepted that.
When Sofia left the prison, Mateo was waiting in the parking lot.
He handed her an envelope.
"Found this in Mom's things."
Inside was a letter Elena had written but never mailed.
Sofia unfolded it.

The first line made her stop walking.
If my children ever learn the truth, I hope they choose each other over protecting me.
