Chapter 20 - What Sofia Chose

One year after the wedding, Sofia returned to the same hotel ballroom.

Not for another marriage.

For Mateo's thirty-eighth birthday.

He hated the attention.

That was why she invited almost everyone.

Brenda from their mother's old church came. Two former investigators came. Even Ethan stood near the back holding a cake box because Sofia had learned he could dismantle a criminal conspiracy but could not bake anything without setting off a smoke alarm.

Mateo looked around the room.

"This is excessive."

"You disappeared for seven birthdays. We're catching up."

He pulled her into a hug.

Rafael called from prison that morning. Mateo did not answer.

Sofia did.

Boundaries, she had learned, were not the same as cruelty.

Grant and Wynn were awaiting trial. Salazar had pleaded guilty. Margaret Vale was under strict supervision as part of her cooperation deal.

None of that repaired seven lost years.

But truth had stopped the damage from multiplying.

Later, Sofia stepped onto the balcony where Ethan was waiting.

He handed her a small box.

She narrowed her eyes. "If that's a ring, I'm throwing it off the balcony."

"It's not."

Inside was the silver key marked 317.

"The locker was closed months ago," she said.

"I know."

"Then why give me this?"

"Because that's where you stopped being the collateral in somebody else's deal."

Sofia turned the key over in her palm.

"I thought that happened when I married you."

Ethan shook his head.

"No. That was still someone else making the move. The locker was where you started asking your own questions."

She smiled.

Inside the ballroom, Mateo shouted, "Are you two being emotionally healthy out there? It's disgusting."

Sofia laughed.

A year earlier, she had walked toward an altar believing her life had been purchased.

She had been wrong.

Money had bought debts. Fear had bought silence. Lies had bought time.

But none of them had ever owned her.

She slipped the old locker key into her pocket and walked back inside beside Ethan, not behind him.

And when Mateo raised his glass, Sofia finally understood what her mother had tried to tell them all along.

Family was not who you protected from the truth.

Family was who could survive hearing it.
