Chapter 10 - The Lake House

There was no Whitmore lake house.

At least not officially.

The property sat two hours outside Nashville under an LLC called Blue Heron Retreats.

Foundation records described it as a donor hospitality venue.

Isabella had been there.

She thought her father rented it.

"We held a summer fundraiser there," she said.

Blue Heron was owned by Victor Whitmore personally through another company.

The foundation paid him rent.

Over four years, nearly four hundred thousand dollars.

Charles looked at Isabella.

She looked like she might be sick.

"I posted pictures from that place."

"You didn't know who owned it," Eleanor said.

"I helped advertise it."

"Both can be true."

Eleanor's insistence on separating responsibility from self-hatred frustrated everyone.

It also kept the story from becoming easier than reality.

Victor finally issued a statement.

He called the audit "a politically motivated attack triggered by a family dispute."

He accused Charles of using financial questions to justify abandoning Isabella.

He accused Eleanor of manipulating the foundation after making a voluntary donation.

Then he said something that changed the tone.

"Mrs. Bennett demanded private influence in exchange for her gift."

Eleanor stared at the television.

"That's defamation."

"We respond with documents."

Eleanor already knew which one.

It contained a clause she had requested herself:

DONOR SHALL RECEIVE NO NAMING RIGHTS, GOVERNANCE RIGHTS, OR PERSONAL BENEFIT.

Samuel released the agreement with Eleanor's permission.

Public opinion swung again.

But Eleanor hated the celebration online.

People who had mocked Isabella two days earlier now treated Eleanor like a saint.

"I'm not a saint," she told Charles.

"I know."

"That came out too fast."

He smiled for the first time all week.

Investigators had searched Blue Heron.

In Victor's desk they found a binder titled:

ROSE CREEK ACQUISITION.

Charles frowned.

"Acquisition?"

Eleanor went still.

May you like

Victor had not only used her farm money.

He had been planning to buy the rest of her farm after the wedding.
