Chapter 12 - The Offer

Isabella read Victor's offer in the farmhouse kitchen.
He called it a settlement proposal.
It was blackmail wearing legal language.
She would accept responsibility for the wedding reimbursements and donor representations.
Victor would "resolve property disputes" by transferring the north acreage to Eleanor.
Charles crushed the edge of the paper in his fist.
"Don't destroy evidence."
"Mom."
"I'm serious."
Isabella stared at the last page.
"He thinks I'll do it."
"Would you?"
"Would I what?"
"Take the land back if I signed this?"
"No."
"Absolutely not."
She folded the pages neatly and handed them to Rachel.
"Give it to investigators."
That was the moment Charles saw something change in her.
She was finally choosing truth when truth cost her.
The next day Isabella issued a statement of her own.
She admitted she humiliated Eleanor.
She admitted repeating claims about the children's wing without verifying them.
She admitted signing reimbursement documents she did not read carefully.
She did not claim she was tricked into everything.
She did not ask the public to forgive her.
The statement ended:
"Being manipulated does not erase the harm I caused while I was proud, careless, and cruel."
Charles asked:
"What do you think?"
"I think it's a beginning."
"For us?"
"For her."
Then Rachel called with news from the forensic team.
Victor had attempted to delete one set of files before the search.
Technicians recovered them.
The folder contained donor profiles, leverage notes, and private vulnerabilities.
At the bottom of Eleanor's page was a handwritten line:
SENTIMENTAL ABOUT HOSPITAL. USE CHARLES.
Eleanor stared.
May you like
Victor had known exactly why she would sell the land.
He had engineered the request around her son's childhood illness.
