Chapter 13 - He Used the Hospital

Samuel Reed reconstructed the timeline.

Months before Eleanor donated, Victor told Charles the children's wing might fail.

Charles mentioned it to his mother over Sunday dinner.

"Isabella is devastated," he had said.

Eleanor remembered.

Two weeks later Victor arranged for Samuel to call Eleanor directly and explain the matching-grant deadline.

Samuel had not known he was being used.

"I thought Victor was trying to save the project," he said.

"So did I."

Victor knew St. Matthew's had treated Charles as a child.

He knew Eleanor had once said she owed the hospital more than she could repay.

He turned gratitude into a financial lever.

Charles looked physically ill.

"I carried the message to you."

"You didn't know."

"Neither did Isabella."

"Correct."

She always brought him back to the same place.

The investigation became public after the foundation board reported suspected misuse to authorities.

Victor resigned as chairman.

Claudia resigned from the gala committee.

Mason cooperated fully and returned documents he had taken.

Isabella returned every wedding gift that could be returned.

She sold the custom reception furniture and donated the proceeds back to the children's project.

Eleanor heard about it from Samuel.

Some things needed to be done without applause.

Then Victor arrived at Rose Creek.

Charles happened to be there repairing a tractor.

He stepped between Victor and the porch.

"Leave."

"I came to speak to Eleanor."

"You can speak through counsel."

"What do you want?"

"I want to explain."

"No."

"You haven't heard me."

"I heard enough recordings."

"I kept hundreds of people employed."

"Maybe."

"The foundation would have collapsed."

"Maybe."

"I did what I had to do."

Eleanor finally stepped closer.

"No. You did what you wanted to do and called it necessary afterward."

Then he said:

"Your son will come back to Isabella."

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

Victor smiled faintly.

"And when he does, this family will need me again."

May you like

Charles walked out from behind her.

"No, we won't."
